Periodontal pockets are the areas below the gum line where gum tissue detaches from the teeth. These pockets host the disease-causing bacteria in your mouth, which causes and contributes to the development of gum disease. If left untreated, these pockets can also lead to the loss of your teeth and supporting bones, bleeding, and discomfort. The goal of flap surgery is to eliminate or reduce these periodontal pockets so that you can begin to heal and recover.

When you receive flap surgery, our dentists will make a small, flap-like incision in your gum tissue. The diseased tissue can then be removed from inside the pocket, and our dentists can thoroughly clean the teeth and gums to further eliminate harmful plaque and bacteria. The flap is then closed to seal the area and begin your healing process.
